Practice and Discovery
DRAFT
The word practice carries layers of meaning that deeply resonate with how I've always wanted to work with clients and how my work has naturally evolved.
A practice suggests ongoing learning, deep attention, and dedication to craft. Think about other contexts where we use this word: We talk about meditation practice, yoga practice, medical practice. In each case, it implies both expertise and humility - an understanding that mastery is a journey, not a destination.
But there's something else that makes this reframing feel so right - the role of discovery. I realized recently that discovery is the common thread that weaves through all my work. As a coach, I learned that discovery is the heart of helping someone find their path forward. As a designer, I use discovery to uncover what wants to be expressed through a website or digital space. And as an improviser - this just hit me - discovery is quite literally the art of finding what comes next, together, in real time. When you improvise you talk about “discovery not invention.”
In all these spaces, discovery is about:
- Being present to what emerges
- Trusting the process
- Working with rather than working for
- Finding truth in the moment
A practice is a space where discovery can live and breathe. Like any good practice, it's both structured and organic, guided by experience but open to possibility. When we say someone has a medical practice or therapy practice, we're talking about a space where people are seen, heard, and supported. It's not about transactions - it's about ongoing relationships and trusted guidance.
When I work with clients to create their websites, we're not just designing pages - we're discovering together. We're finding the truth of what wants to be expressed and creating space for it to come alive online. It's a practice of presence, possibility, and play - all in service of creating something authentically human in the digital realm.
This reframing isn't just semantic - it reflects a deeper truth about how I work with clients. Each website we create together is part of an ongoing process of discovery, a collaborative exploration of how to bring your authentic self into digital space.
