today I met a bluebird

today I met a bluebird
she poked me with her beak
when I turned and yelled out “ouch!”
she began to speak...

she said her name was Susan,
she spoke with a big lisp
told me she had come to me
to grant me one fine wish

as I stood there slack-jawed
susan made a small sad sound
I noticed she was crying there
sitting on the ground

I asked “what is the matter?”
she bent up, looked at me
“because I talk in this weird way
I have no family...

I met a witch while wandering
looking for a home
she gave me magic powers
that’s how your wish was born”

I was quite surprised
by this bluebird’s twisted tale
not what you’re expecting
when out to grab the mail

I looked around and there decided
what my wish would be
I wished for Susan’s lisp to leave
and for her to find a tree...

a place where they would love her
where she would find her friends
where other birds chirped welcome
where her broken heart could mend

a sad shade of thought begins dawning
we will never go back to used to
