This was a project I did basically during the pandemic. I started writing a poem a day. Once ‘real life’ started again it got harder to write everyday, which is interesting.

I have started to edit some of these mostly the kids poetry. I think there might be enough here for a book. We shall see.

I make no claim that much of this is “good” poetry. But I do make the claim that I loved doing it and I learned something and some of it makes me cry.

In Praise of Advil

Have you ever had a headache
The stabbing pounding kind
The pain will drive you crazy
An anvil in the mind
Here I praise dear Advil
That magic little pill
Two roundish blueish capsules
Like shutting off the drill
In only a few moments
The headache is all gone
Thank you dear dear Advil
My life can now go on

Still Stings

I said I would write
One everyday
And in the beginning
It all felt like play
Now that I’ve missed
That one silly time
I find a temptation
To stop the whole climb
Give up and stop
End the whole thing
I debate everyday
That blip, it still stings

Years of Mondays

Once again the sun does peek
Once again you start your week
Once again the day does dawn
Once again you sing your song
Once again your life takes shape
Once again choices you make
Once again the gift appears
Once again days turn to years

the streak is done

I can’t believe it
the streak is done
I forgot my poem
my heart feels wrung
I completely totally
just forgot
I feel so sad
it was all for naught
I will keep going
with one black mark
sunday august 22
it all went dark
:-(

My goal had been to write one poem a day for all of 2021 but I missed yesterday. Now what? Do I have to start over in 2022??

words like kisses

to create our wonderful life
we will surely find streaks of strife
the way we choose what we say
has a clear and powerful sway
the words that we use, they matter
they have the power to heal or to shatter
our dreams, our wants and our wishes
so let your words feel like kisses

note: a part of this is based on an older piece…. but I did edit and it is different so I’m counting this as a new piece… thus counting towards my streak staying intact. ;-)

Hey

I write a poem each day.
It has not always been this way.
My little habit, it stays
mostly because it’s like play.
The quality? Barely ok.
Sometimes the mood is quite gray.
The song in my heart that I pray
is that some days you say yay!

Awakening

Do you hear the buzzing,
the chirps and little tweets?
The song of all the critters
waking up sounds so sweet.
Another day is dawning,
the sun again will shine.
Nature’s constant pattern
repeats another time.
What awakes inside you,
this day like all the rest?
Each morning dawn an invite,
a chance to be our best.

the hope in my heart

fire, smoke or witches
tires off in ditches
whatever the mess
you find as you press
on in this life
(we all have our strife)
the hope in my heart
is that you feel part
of all that is good
my friend, cuz you should
❤️❤️❤️

little shrimpy

into the depth of the sea
the little shrimp did dive
his plan devised to test
the limits of being alive

he kept on going deeper
it was getting dark
kept his shrimp eyes open
alert for any sharks

deeper down he went
ahead it was pitch black
water now much colder
he thought of going back

suddenly out of shadow
appeared a glowing orb
a fish with giant teeth
more than our shrimp could absorb

then he saw a menace
that he had seen before
a giant great white shark
a guest never ever asked for

the shark was clearly hunting
scanning with wicked black eyes
our shrimp hid among some coral
happy for his small size

the shark passed out of sight
then shrimpy did decide
time to head back home
so up and up he began to ride

fun to have adventures
to see what you haven’t seen
but keep your wits about you
in the world does live some mean

when our shrimp got home
he told his friends the tale
as they were chitter chattering
up came a big blue whale

that whale swallowed them up
in one gigantic wave
as our shrimpy was going down
he was glad he had been brave

he had seen something different
he had tested himself for real
he felt proud of his adventure
and that is quite something to feel

Jasmine Jacobs

Jasmine Jacobs was her name
Chasing rabbits was her game
She would wake in early morn
Get outside, yell “you are warned!
The rabbits, they would scatter fast
Jasmine Jacobs legs would blast
Running like a lightning bolt
Those bunnies: fast like healthy colts
Not once has Jasmine caught her prize
But everyday she tries and tries
