This was a project I did basically during the pandemic. I started writing a poem a day. Once ‘real life’ started again it got harder to write everyday, which is interesting.
I have started to edit some of these mostly the kids poetry. I think there might be enough here for a book. We shall see.
off the hook
today I wanted to be off the hook
not write this poem
hoped you won’t look
but…
here I am, it may not be good
but I showed up
cuz’ I said that I would
Chocolate Chip Cookies
ooey gooey
chocolate bits
add some nuts
you have a hit!
crispy edges
soft inside
I’ll save you some...
oops...
I tried !!
Hilly Silly Fun Slop
The snow is piling up
I have coffee in my cup
I really like making rhymes
Could do it all of the time
Yes, this poem is silly
Yes, Colorado is hilly
Yes, now I will stop
with this hilly silly fun slop!
asking for help
asking for help
might be sort of hard
can feel a bit scary
to let down our guard
but think what might happen
if you got rather brave
you’d see that the asking
was a gift that you gave
bippity bobbity boo
bippity bobbity boo
the cow took off and flew
the goat wore a bright yellow shoe
the chicken wanted in too
so she painted her chicks all bright blue
bippity bobbity boo
is that a sheep or a ewe?
this farm is a real crazy zoo!
Happy Monday Friends. Who doesn’t need a bunch of silly rhymes sometimes? 😀
Thank you thank you thank you for reading! ❤️
Victor’s Snow Day
Meet my friend Victor
A snake who likes snow
I know it’s quite strange
I’m sure that you know
Snakes are cold-blooded
Can’t keep themselves warm
But Victor’s an odd one
Not one for the norms
He waits under logs
Or inside a hole
For just the right day
To take his snow stroll
When the sun shines bright
No light wind does blow
Victor will find a black rock
Just above the white snow
He coils up tight
On his rock with a view
Watches snow sparkles
Like diamonds just grew
As the day lengthens
Victor slithers away
Grateful and happy
He had his snow day
whispering promise
some days the dawn breaks
the spell of a long dark night
whispering promise
slippery slope
try to climb a slippery slope
you will not get far
try to climb in your hiking boots
try it in your car
try to climb in your bare feet
you will never grip
try to climb a slippery slope
all you will do is slip
In Praise of The Potato
Oh, the mighty mighty spud,
how I love you so!
Let me call you
your full name
my dear Po-ta-to.
So very very yummy
in all your varied forms —
baked or mashed
or hashed right up —
you make my belly warm!
I know you have detractors,
they spur you for your carbs.
Let’s ignore those silly folk,
their cruel warnings,
senseless barbs!
For you are The Potato!
A king! A queen! A prince!
Always there for easy eating,
a quick boil
after a rinse.
Thank you thank you Dear Potato,
for all your fleshy starch!
Should they try to ban you
to your defense
I will march!!
slosh and slush
slosh and slush
snow and ice
driving ‘round
not too nice
best to stay
tucked inside
blanket’s warm
here I’ll hide
some other day
sometimes the hill
is just too steep
you try and try
but progress creeps
sometimes the wise
choice is best
take a break
have a rest
the hill it won’t
just go away
best to climb
some other day
the end of my rope
so very tired
of frigid cold
covid sure is
getting old
so very hard
to hold out hope
just keep gripping
the end of the rope
Old Man Winter
Old Man Winter
he often blusters in
but then his forces settle
the light begins to dim
he twists his frosty grip
over air and ground and light
nothing can escape him now
the day has lost to night
locked inside his icy grasp
like holding frost-filled breath
don’t relent, hold his gaze
or it will mean your death
one day he will falter
seem to melt away
you will feel the warmth again
the night will fade to day
I worried
I worried
about myself and my body and the world and kids and old people and the climate and too much rain and too much heat and volcanoes and tsunamis and germs and shots and masks and work and money and the future and the past
and I told a friend
and we laughed
and for that moment
I didn’t worry
This poem was inspired by Mary Oliver (in fact, I copied her!) and my friend Beth ❤️ thanks salt sister!
